If you're starting, then make sure you have aBI Strategy Development to describe what you want to measure in your business before making reports or dashboards. If there's no plan in place, groups will gather excessive amounts of data and still not be able to make decisions. If it's a good plan, it’s doing more than just setting metrics and reporting needs; it's also looking at future growth needs. As I've noted, there are companies that spend hours, even days, on planning and then find they never have to deal with the cost of the changes that would have been necessary at a later date, and have much more useful reporting systems as a result.
